Here comes the story of the single largest donation made by an Indian-American family in the United States! The Indian-American couple, Cardiologist Kiran C Patel and Pediatrician Pallavi Patel, dreamt of the state-of-the-art medical college for advanced healthcare in Florida and internationally for underprivileged communities of India and Africa.
They fulfilled their dream by donating USD 250 million, including USD 50 million gift and USD 150 million real estate and facility investment by the Patel family foundation, for setting up the institution.
The couple inaugurated the Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) new regional campus, built on their donation, at an opening ceremony in Clear Water (Florida) on September 14, 2019.
In Just 17 Months
The new three-story medical education complex was built in an area of 311,000 sq.ft. in Tampa Bay and was completed in just 17 months period.
This campus will serve as the satellite campus for four other institutions including Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care sciences and the Dr Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine.
“I feel that it is more important than ever to advance the current state of health care. It is rare for someone to have the opportunity to impact the world in this way, and, as an immigrant to the US, I am particularly honored to be able to make a difference in people’s lives around the world,”
Dr. Kiran said in a statement.
Through this institution, the duo aims to train and craft future physicians and other health care providers to serve in needy areas across the US and globally.
The new campus is accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic Accreditation and the first batch of 150 osteopathic medicine (D.O.) students from the college are set to graduate in 2023.
Born in Zambia, Kiran went on to pursue his education in India.
