Its is said that each team has two or three
batsmen who are great and the entire
strategy of a team revolves around them.
What happens when you have some good batters
who click and the rest put in their effort
too, well you get a score of 214 for 9
wickets in 40 over’s. That’s what happened
on a sunny but windy morning on Saturday
July 21, 07. Sriram Srinivasan was once
again lucky with the toss and elected to
bat. Soon we saw Sriram Srinivasan and Atul
Huckoo opening the innings for Edison
Cricket Club.
ECC were off the moment Atul glanced the
third delivery of the match for a single
behind backward short leg. The score board
was kept ticking with quick singles by both
openers as it was not easy pickings for
them. Even though Sameer Bhosle and Joyesh
Sengupta of Hyderabad Blues lacked in pace
they kept bowling in the right corridor
which is in and around the off stump and now
then they were able to get the ball to
swing.
Rohit was first change and had immediate
success when he got Sriram out with his
individual score on 14 and ECC were 21 for
one. Fahad Sultan walked in and slowly
started to settle in when he lost Atul
caught behind off a ball which moved late
and just enough to beat him and ECC were 28
for 2. Chirag Patel soon settled in, along
with his partner Fahad as they steadied the
innings. Their partnership of 47 runs came
to an end when Chirag who was playing well
got caught at the boundary line trying to go
over the ropes for a six. It was well judged
catch and Chirag was gone after scoring 12.
Farrukh Khan walked in and soon started to
play his shots. 13 runs later Fahad who was
playing so well got caught of Sameer’s
bowling after scoring 28 good runs.

In walked in Rakesh Shah who does not
believe in wasting any time not that he is a
slouch between the wickets, but singles and
two’s are merely tactical options for him,
his game as we all know by now are revolves
around hitting boundaries. To state the
obvious, boundaries keep the runs coming
faster but Rakesh’s motives are far darker;
he aims for subjugation. In depositing a
good – length ball outside off behind mid
wicket, the message to the bowler is
unambiguous; no length or line is safe. When
Rakesh gets going, momentum shifts, not only
the rhythm of the match changes, but he also
induces his partner into scoring and that
what happened. Both Farrukh and Rakesh
merely went about dispatching the balls to
the boundary and in no time they added 62
runs for the fifth wicket. When suddenly
Rakesh was bowled by Vidyadhar by one which
kept low. Farrukh carried on for an over or
two before he got stumped for 30.
By now Rakesh’s infectious batting style had
been induce into the incoming batsmen and
Sanjay Sharma and Vipul Patel who scored 22
and 25 who remained not out respectively
kept hitting those huge sixes across the
boundary line. In the end ECC had put a
total of 214 for 9 in 40 over’s. In all it
was a good batting display by all their
batters, a good team effort as all batters
contribute to the
score.
Set to score 215 runs for victory in 40
over’s at a run rate of 5.375 Hyderabad
Blues came out with all guns firing, in the
first six over’s they managed to score 30
runs at a run rate of 5 runs per over. Their
opening batsman Shanmuga Anandaraman took
liking to Rizwan and took him to the
cleaners. Rizwan’s first spell of 3 over’s
cost ECC 17 runs. Even Sriram was not spared
and he too gave away 10 runs in his first
three over’s.
Sriram is a shrewd captain after the initial
7 over’s he immediately got Santosh Kumar
and Farrukh Khan on. Farrukh got him
immediate result by getting rid of Ibrahim
Mirza. Santosh bowled 3 over’s with little
success in the process giving away 17 runs.
Vipul the rocket man replaced Santosh from
the other end and immediately bowled
Vidyadhar, Taha and Joyesh. The reason I say
“Rocket Man” as one the wickets which Vipul
took, the center stump went cart wheeling
approximately 22 yards which was a wonderful
sight to watch. Meanwhile, Farrukh had got
the better of Rajat and ECC were more or
less back on track. Shanmuga was turning out
to be the thorn and one had to wait till
Fahad Sultan came on to get him and in the
process got an additional bonus as well by
getting Kirit out too. Once Shanmuga was
back in the hut after being out for a well
made 60, ECC’s fielding relaxed, and a few
easy catches were dropped before HBCC were
all out for 156. Vipul and Farrukh both took
4 wickets each, one with sheer pace the
other with spin. Fahad joined in with 2
wickets of his own.
The Man of the Match award was once again a
difficult decision for the management team
of ECC, as Rakesh Shah had batted
brilliantly, Vipul Patel had batted well and
bowled well finally they decided to award
Farrukh Khan for he made 30 good runs and
took four wickets with his leg spinning
bowling. Congrads, to Farrukh and well done
ECC!
This is the fifth victory for ECC in a row;
it seems to be getting into a winning habit
which is good for any team. With a 78 % win
factor they currently standing at number 7
in conference B, I am sure they will be
fancying their chances of playing the
quarter finals. There next game is with
Frankshire Cricket Club on Sunday 29th,
2007 at the Somerset – ICC ground which is
on Route 27 in Franklin Park .
This is Cricket Bug signing off, have a nice
week.
