22 Indian States Announce Free COVID-19 Vaccination From May 1

At the time when the coronavirus resurgence is creating chaos in India, at least 22 state governments have declared that they provide free COVID-19 vaccine to their population.

While some states have declared vaccination free of cost for all, others have announced that the vaccine will be free for people of age 18-45 years only. However, the nationwide free vaccination drive for people of age above 45 will continue as usual.

So far, over 14.19 crore doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been inoculated in the country to people above 45 years and healthcare and frontline workers. From May 1, the government will start vaccinating all people above the age of 18 years.

The state governments will procure COVID-19 vaccines from the Serum Institute of India and Bharath Biotech. The SII will supply its ‘COVISHIELD’ vaccine to the state governments at INR 400 per dose, while Bharath Biotech will sell its COVAXIN vaccine at INR 600.

As the deadly coronavirus continues to sweep throughout the country, India is struggling to cope up with an unprecedented record of new cases and deaths on a daily basis.

In the past 24 hours ending Monday morning, India reported 3.52 lakh coronavirus infection cases and 2,812 deaths. Since the last five days, India has recorded a daily rise of over 3 lakh infection cases and over 2,000 deaths.

With this, the total coronavirus infections tally in the country reached 17,313,163, while the total deaths stood at 195,123. So far, 14,304,382 COVID-19 patients have recovered successfully. Currently, there are 2,814,544 active cases in India.
