IndianEra > Coronavirus > COVID-19: Conspiracy Theories Go Viral Across India!

Whatever it is, Indian netizens leave no stone unturned in making viral on anything in public domain.

They are doing a similar act on coronavirus or COVID-19.

While the government-recommended announcements and safety measures are on one side, the other side of the information spread is happening around viral conspiracy videos on coronavirus.

Over the period since the virus outbreak began, there have been videos going on virally about meat markets in China.

There were also videos about the Chinese personnel catching hold of citizens infected by COVID-19.

A senior Indian opposition leader Manish Tewari added to the rise of such videos around coronavirus.

“Coronavirus is a bio-weapon that went rogue or was made to go rouge. It is an act of terror. International investigation conducted either under auspices of ICJ or ICC is necessary to unearth the truth & bring focus back on eradicating Biological Weapons,” Manish tweeted.

There were many such conspiracies around COVID-19 with more of Chinese people involved.

As the reports say, a local lawyer from the eastern state of Bihar has filed a complaint against the Chinese President on the lines of ‘hatching a conspiracy to spread coronavirus’.

There have also been a wide range of weird comments and abuse around Chinese eating habits and their foods.

This spread of disinformation about spread and deaths of coronavirus has also contributed to corona panic in the Indian society.

“The world over, there have been questions about China’s initial response to the outbreak, from trying to cover it up initially to underestimating the damage. Much of this suspicion could be fueling this disinformation,” says Maya Mirchandani, a journalist and senior fellow at the think-tank Observer Research Foundation.

Political and military wide differences between India and China have aggravated the situation.

“These political differences also fuel mistrust. Adding to it, because China is not an open democracy, there is suspicion that accurate information is not coming out of the country,” she added.

“When they cannot explain a tragedy, humans tend to want to look for enemies who they can blame and pin responsibility for the tragedy on. The Covid-19 outbreak is such a tragedy which has left people grasping for answers,” says Joseph MT, a sociologist at Mumbai University, citing gaps between India and China.
