IndianEra > Business > COVID-19: India Cancels 500,000 PPE Kits Order From China

Earlier this week, we have seen PPE kits and necessary medical equipment from China failing quality tests in India.

In another latest update, India has reportedly cancelled an order of around 500,000 PPE kits from China after they failed quality check.

The Indian Government has also called off the kits that were already in use across states.

These kits are aimed at finding antibodies in the blood of COVID-19 infected patients.

Through these tests that take 30 minutes to deliver results, authorities detect the scale of disease in a specific area.

As scientists across the world say, these rapid antibody tests may not directly help in detecting the coronavirus.

“The quality of medical products exported from China is prioritized. It is unfair and irresponsible for certain individuals to label Chinese products as ‘faulty’ and look at issues with pre-emptive prejudice,” says Chinese embassy spokesperson Ji Rong.

Meanwhile, majority of Indian states have been pushing the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to allow testing with these kits, owing to the increasing spread of the virus.

In this regard, ICMR imported kits from China to address the local concerns.

But state authorities started complaining about accuracy of these kits being just 5 percent on an average.

In their investigations, these kits have showed negative for antibodies even for patients who were already positive.

Then these tests eventually failed in ICMR quality checks.

The issue reached to the next level with Delhi High Court stating the government has overpaid for these kits.

However, the officials confirmed the court that the government will not suffer losses due to this order as it hasn’t paid the amount in advance and has cancelled the order totally.
