IndianEra > Coronavirus > Covid-19 India: New Mutation Might Cause ‘Urgency’

India’s Covid-19 positive cases heading to the next big number

It seems so considering the current rate of rise, 56,516 positive cases and 1895 deaths as per the latest figures on May 08, 2020.

It took just 4 days to reach this level after crossing the 40,000 mark on May 03, 2020.

A team of scientists, including the US Government’s Los Alamos Laboratory and TIFR’s Dr. Tanmoy Bhattacharya identified a mutation called D614G in the key protein region of SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19.

They warn that this mutation will cause an urgency, contributing to the spread of virus further.

Meanwhile, an India-born professor SS Vasan and his colleagues at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization conducted an analysis of this mutation.

They confirmed the existence of this mutation in 50 percent of 82 strains of virus they analyzed from India.

According to the Sitabhra Sinha, a researcher at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Chennai, the current RO (spelled as R-naught) of 1.2 is less than the rate in early phases of the virus outbreak.

However, this might contribute to the rise of cases to 62,000 by mid-May 2020. At the initial rate, the cases might have gone to 100,000 by April itself.

The country’s doubling rate has also increased to 10.2 days in the last week period, with more cases from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Delhi.
