Amid heated discussions underway about the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), here comes an important revelation about the Indian citizenship to foreigners.

In a Lok Sabha session on February 04, 2020, the Home Ministry said 21,408 foreigners were given Indian citizenship in the last decade.

In response to a written question, the Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said a total of 19,008 foreigners received Indian citizenship between 2015 and 2019.

Of this, 14,864 were from Bangladeshis alone, who were offered citizenship under Section 7 of the Citizenship Act, 1955 in line with the Indo-Bangladesh land boundary agreement signed in 2015.

Under the agreement, around 53 Bangladeshi enclaves became part of the Indian territory.

While a total of 2,400 other foreign citizens were granted the Indian citizenship between 2010 and 2014.

According to the Department of Immigration, 445 Bangladeshi immigrants were repatriated in 2018, followed by 51 in 2017 and 308 in 2016.

Meanwhile in another discussion, BJP MP Dubey complained about the growing concerns caused by the increasing Bangladeshi infiltration in Jharkhand.

“Illegal immigration is a huge problem in my state. The issues of CAA, NRC and NPR may or may not important elsewhere but in my state, it is very important… I request you to implement NRC across the country,” reads Dubey’s statement.

In this regard, he urged for immediate implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
