Finally, the big voice from the Indian Muslim community clarified to the protestors on the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019.

The Shahi Imam of Delhi Jama Masjid Imam Ahmed Bukhari said the Bill has ‘nothing to do with Indian Muslims’!

Addressing the nation-wide protestors, he said even the National Register of Citizens (NRC) “has not become the law” yet.

Shahi Imam said this in a video that has been making rounds across various online platforms.

“To protest is the democratic right of the people of India, no one can stop us from doing it. However, it is important that it is done in control, keeping our emotions in control is the most important part,” reads a statement by Shahi Imam.

Reiterating that the Bill will not have any impact on Indian Muslims, he said that will only be Muslims refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

He further clarified on the difference between the Citizenship Amendment Act and NRC.

“There is a difference between Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) & National Register of Citizens (NRC). One is CAA that has become a law, and the other is NRC that has only been announced, it has not become a law. Under CAA, the Muslim refugees who come to India from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will not get Indian citizenship. It has nothing to do with the Muslims living in India,” he noted.

These statements by the Jama Masjid’s top cleric gain significance in view of the violent protests across the country on the CAB and NRC.

What’s next on CAB is worth waiting, stay tuned!
