IndianEra > Government > Demand for ‘NRC Review’ in Assam: 4 Jihadis, 80 Lakh Foreigners Included!

While the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is on big debate across India, here comes an alarming update about NRC in Assam.

The local NGO Assam Public Works (APW) made some shocking revelations about the updated list of NRC.

The updated NRC list has the names of around 80 lakh foreigners, including arrested ‘jihadis’, the NGO said, seeking SC to call for 100% verification of the final citizenship list.

100% Verification of the Final Citizenship List

APW was crucial behind the Supreme Court’s (SC) decision ruling on updated NRC, which was based on the organization’s 2009 petition.

“Azharuddin, Ranjit Ali, Luit Jamiul Jamal and Muaddir Islam were the arrested jihadis have been Indian citizens through the NRC. We have been repeatedly pointing out these wrongs and prodding the authorities to rectify them,” APW Chief Abhijeet Sharma.

These four, termed ‘jihadis’, were arrested by Delhi Police after they have allegedly planned attacks in the capital city and blasts in Goalpara Raas Mahotsav.

In response to NRC published on August 31, 2019, the organization filed an affidavit requesting the apex court to set up an ‘alternative mechanism’ for the indigenous population to prove their land ownership.

The affidavit also requested the court to constitute a judicial committee to address the inconsistencies and corruption cases reported during NRC implementation.

NRC Implementation in Assam

The NRC implementation in Assam involved a Rs. 4.86 crore misappropriation case that was made in the name of renting 3,700 generators.

The organization urged the court to conduct NRC review after hearing two cases related to cut-off date and other about Section 3 and 6 of the Citizenship Act 1955.
