Here comes a sudden surprise when India and China are debating re seriously engaged in border disputes.

And, that is Russia’s sudden intervention!

The Russian Foreign Minister called for a Russia-India-China (RIC) trilateral foreign ministry level meeting on June 23, 2020.

This will be the first time that the Indian and Chinese Foreign Affairs ministers Jaisankar and Wang Yi will be facing each other after a serious telephonic conversation on June 17, 2020.

In another schedule, Russia is also bringing together Defense ministers of India and China, Rajnath Singh and Wei Fenghe.

The two leaders will be joining Russia for the Victory Day parade on June 24, 2020, along with marching contingents of either side.

Apart from these ministry-level meets, India and Russia engaged in discussions across other diplomatic channels in recent times.

Prior to the talks with China on June 6th, Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla had reportedly appraised Russian envoy Nikolay Kudashev about the recent developments across the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Indian envoy to Russia D Bala Venkatesh and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov held talks on June 17th about the tensions across the Galwan Valley.

While the Indian Government didn’t announce anything about this, the Russian Foreign Ministry had issued an official statement.

“The officials discussed regional security, including developments on the LAC on the border between India and China in the Himalayas,” Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Sino-Russia Ties: Once Rivals, Now Friends!

Russia and China had years of communication gap caused by a run for control over the global Communist movement and the Cold War.

However, a shift in their diplomatic ties was observed since the formation of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The Crimea issue made them more closer on lines of the anti-West rhetoric.

And, the West calls this new Sino-Russia cooperation as the ‘friendship of convenience’.

Now their ties received due encouragement with the US acting tough to both on the COVID-19 outbreak.

At the economic level, China is now Russia’s biggest trade and investment partner.

Indo-Russia Ties: A Defense Partnership

The immediate point to explain Indo-Russia relations is the strong defense and intel ties, spanning for decades.

India continues to procure the majority of its defense technology and related manufacturing equipment from Russia even today.

Now, Rajnath is scheduled to discuss new defense deals during his tomorrow’s visit to Russia.

On the Sino-India ongoing tensions, Russia’s Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has reportedly said, “Certainly, we are watching with great attention what is happening on the Chinese-Indian border. We believe that this is a very alarming report.”

The statement further reads that the two nations are capable of preventing such happenings and ensure stability in the region.

Now, we will have wait and watch how Russia mediates further in the upcoming meets!
