Finally, the Supreme Court responded to the protestors and oppositions’ concerns pertaining to the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The apex court refused to hold the implementation of the law and instead, urged the Center to respond on petitions within a month period.

Various petitions were filed at the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional validity of CAA.

It said it might consider a larger bench in future and asked the Center to reply to pending petitions.

Political parties, Islamic groups and civil society members, who were among the petitioners, claim that the law is violating the constitutional provisions by granting citizenship based on religion.

While the government says the law will safeguard all refugees facing persecution on the basis of religion, protestors argue it will marginalize India’s Muslim minority.

There have been a wide range of protests across the country and globally by non-resident Indian communities on CAA implementation.

Student groups and various other protesting groups have been staging demonstrations against the law across roads and at the institutional level.

While some states are still protesting against the law, some are getting prepared for the implementation in their respective zones. UP was the first to implement the law till date.
