Finally, the international rights body raised its serious concern over the widely-debated Indian Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019.

The UN Human Rights spokesperson urged India to scrap the Bill calling that as ‘fundamentally discriminative in nature’.

“Although India’s broader naturalization laws remain in place, these amendments will have a discriminatory effect on people’s access to nationality,” Jeremy Laurence, a spokesperson with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said on December 13, 2019.

Addressing the press in Geneva, Laurence has said that the Bill appears to undermine India’s commitment to equality before the law, as envisioned by its Constitution.

The official pointed at India’s endorsement of the Global Compact for Safe, Regular and Orderly Migration along with the international community in last December.

“All migrants, regardless of their migration status, are entitled to respect, protection and fulfillment of their human rights,” adds Laurence.

Welcoming the Bill’s intention of safeguarding persecuted groups, UN human rights said that should ideally happen through a robust asylum that respects equality and non-discrimination, irrespective of race, religion, national origin or other status.

“We understand the new law will be reviewed by the Supreme Court of India and hope it will consider carefully the compatibility of the law with India’s international human rights obligations”, noted Laurence.

The UN’s statements are coming in the wake of violent protests that are underway in the Northeast and West Bengal, with New Delhi joining the row, recently.

On account of the protests, the government has also ordered internet shut down in Northeast states of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh until December 16, 2019.

Amid the heated discussion around the Bill, the Bangladesh Government requested to reveal the list of Bangladeshi illegal migrants in India.

Responding to a query on the National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Bangladesh Foreign Minister
A K Abdul Momen said their relationship with India will not be affected.

“We will allow them (Bangladeshi citizens) as they have the right to enter into their own country,” said Momen, informing that they have requested India to provide the list.
