IndianEra > Coronavirus > Coronavirus Outbreak: More than 20,000 in China Alone, ‘Likely a Pandemic’!

Dubbed as the ‘major test’ to China in its history, the month-old coronavirus is spreading like a wildfire affecting public in large numbers.

Coronavirus Death Toll Rising

As of February 03, 2020, coronavirus has claimed more than 425 lives and affected 20,438 people in China alone, besides affecting 23 other countries.

According to the Chinese Government, the number of coronavirus-infected cases are growing by more than 2000 per day.

Wuhan residents say that the number of coronavirus deaths could be more than the government’s tally.

According to the World Health Organization, the coronavirus outbreak is far more than the previous-deadly SARS outbreak in China that claimed 349 lives.

US has already begun stopping flights, Russia also suspended all rail links across its 2,600-mile border with China and Hong Kong closed its four border crossings to mainland China.

Many other nations have already suspended flights to and from China.

From Epidemic To Pandemic: Experts

As the virus is growing into a ‘deadliest epidemic’, the world nations are preparing to isolate China in terms of stock, trade, oil and other major areas of cooperation.

Disease experts working on the issue say that the outbreak, currently an ongoing epidemic in one or more continents, is likely to become a pandemic.

“There’s no sign that it’s getting better. We don’t see a pattern of decline, and that’s a problem,” says Leo Poon, Division Head, Department of Public Health Laboratory Sciences, University of Hong Kong.

Scientists say coronavirus is a fast-spreading one than the previous virus’ SARS and MERS.

“It’s very, very transmissible, and it almost certainly is going to be a pandemic. But will it be catastrophic? I don’t know,” says Dr Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.
