IndianEra > Coronavirus > Covid-19 India: Lockdown Contributes to Air Quality!

The discussion everywhere is about the lockdown in India due to coronavirus outbreak.

While the act is clearly to break the chain of coronavirus spread, here is a different approach towards the same.

A latest report from IQAir said the lockdown has indirectly contributed to clean environment by way of the Air Quality Index (AQI).

“Obviously slowing down the economy to such a degree isn’t the ideal way of bringing down air pollution but at least it proves that it can be done, if the intention is there,” says Jyoti Pande Lavakare, co-founder of Care For Air, an organization that works for clean environment.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the lockdown has brought the air quality to satisfactory levels in around 90 percent of the 103 cities across the country.

The improved air quality has clearly contributed to the country’s fight against pneumonia-like virus.

“We are now able to treat asthmatic patients with minimum medications. Right now, in this season, I’m getting only 20% to 30% of the calls,” says Delhi-based pulmonologist Pankaj Sayal.

However, experts are worried that the controlled pollution is short lived and may improve as the factories get back to work.

“If the economic restart isn’t done mindfully, pollution will come roaring back as industries try and catch up. I expect this winter to be worse than usual,” says Pande Lavakare.
