Now, the discussion is all around the ‘COVID-19 vaccine’.

Where is the COVID-19 Vaccine?

‘FabiFlu’ for Treating Coronavirus

In a major breakthrough over the weekend, Mumbai-based Glenmark launched an antiviral drug called Fabipiravir branded as ‘FabiFlu’ for treating Coronavirus.

Priced at Rs. 103 per tablet, FabiFlu helps treat mild-moderate COVID-19 cases, say the sources.

Another leading pharma player GSK is also embracing a vaccine project that has reportedly entered the clinical trial stage.

The company plans to produce at least 1 billion doses of the efficacy boosters for COVID-19 shots in 2021. It is reportedly an efficacy booster that will be a mix of traditional vaccines.

GSK has reportedly shared its adjuvant to alliances, including Chinese biotech firms Clover Biopharmaceuticals, Xiamen Innovax, and Chongqing Zhifei, along with the University of Queensland in Australia and Sanofi.

Meanwhile, WHO says around 13 vaccines are being tested on humans, globally, and more than 120 others are in early stages of development.

Biotechnology and pharmaceutical firms AstraZeneca Plc and Moderna Inc. are planning a heavy production and are expecting to deliver millions of doses of their experimental vaccines before the end of 2020.

The sixth vaccine from China has begun its human trials, and another by Germany’s CureVac is expected to come early September or October 2020.

WHO Chief Scientist Dr. Sowmya Swaminathan

WHO Chief Scientist Dr. Sowmya Swaminathan expects hundreds of millions of COVID-19 vaccine doses by the 2020 end and more than 2 billion doses by 2021.

“At the moment, we do not have a proven vaccine, but if we are lucky, there will be one of two successful candidates before the end of this year and 2 billion doses by the end of next year,” Dr. Swaminathan said in a media briefing in Geneva.
