Google today honored famous Indian long-distance swimmer and Olympian Arati Saha on her 80th birth anniversary with a mesmerizing doodle.
In 1959, she became the first Asian woman to swim across the English Channel. She swam 67.5 km in 16 hours and 20 minutes.
In 1960, Saha also became the first woman to bag the Padma Shri award, the 4th highest civilian honor in India.
On this day in 1940, she was born in Kolkata. She started swimming at an early age of four. Eventually, Saha went on to represent India at the 1952 Summer Olympics. At the Olympics, she participated in 200 meters breaststroke event and clocked 3 minutes and 40.8 seconds.
In 1996, the local government built a bust of Saha near her residence and renamed the 100-meter long lane near the bust after her.
In 1999, the Indian Postal Department celebrated her achievements by releasing a postal stamp of INR 3 denomination with her picture.
