In a first-of-its-kind initiative for women welfare, the Government of New Delhi kickstarted a ‘free bus ride scheme’ on October 29, 2019.
The scheme was launched on the #BhaiDhooj2019 in line with the promise by the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on the #IndependencyDay2019.
Under this free ride scheme, women will be given pink tickets to travel in Delhi Transport Corporation and cluster buses.
“Free-ride for women in Delhi buses has started from today. Congratulations Delhi! Apart from women safety, it will also increase the role of women in Delhi economy…,” reads a translated tweet by Deputy CM Manish Sisodia.
And, the transporters will be reimbursed on the basis of pink tickets they have issued.
The free ride is applicable in Noida-NCR, airport and other special services operated by DTC and cluster scheme operators.
However, female employees of the Delhi Government, local bodies and undertakings will have to forego their Travel Allowance (TA) to avail this #FreeRideScheme.
As per the government figures, the city buses in Delhi carry around 45 lakh passengers a day.
