Amid the stand-off between India and China over the border dispute, the Indian Prime Minister took a strategic step towards the ‘Act East’ policy.

In a recent move, Narendra Modi had talks with Cambodia and the Philippines, which are China’s close neighbors in Southeast Asia.

In discussions with Cambodian President, Modi has reportedly emphasized the Act East policy and called for a review of cooperation between the two nations.

Cambodia President Hun Sen and Modi have discussed renewed cooperation in capacity building programs under the ITEC scheme and Quick Impact projects under the Mekong-Ganga Cooperation Framework.

“Discussed the COVID-19 pandemic with Prime Minister Hun Sen. India shares deep cultural and historical links with Cambodia – an important partner in our extended neighborhood. I conveyed India’s commitment to further strengthening its relationship with Cambodia in all areas,” Modi tweeted after discussions.

The two sides also discussed cooperation in expatriates and ways to facilitate their evacuation.

Modi has also reportedly mentioned the Philippines as a ‘strategic’ security partner in the Indo-Pacific region, said an official note about the meetings.

The Indian PM has also extended India’s full-fledged support to the Philippines in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

In another update, Modi also held talks with Israel on ways to jointly develop the vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics for COVID-19.

As the sources say, Modi is also in touch with other world neighbors in its proximity and holding significant Indian diaspora.
