The International Migrant Stock 2019 by the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs or DESA revealed this in its recent estimates.

The total number of migrants globally was found to be 273 million, by origin, age and sex across all countries and areas of the world.

While the world top-10 nations accounted for the major share, India was the leading country of origin of international migrants.

International Migrants in India

When it comes to hosting, India saw 5.1 million international migrants in 2019, less than 5.2 million in 2015, with majority hailing from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal.

International migrants accounted for 0.4% of the Indian population steadily for the 2010-19 period. Surprisingly, refugees alone held 4% share (at around 207,000 in number) of the total international migrant population in India.

Female population (48%) held majority share by gender and the median age of the international migrants was 47.1 years.

At the region level, Europe (82 million) hosted the largest number of migrant population, followed by Northern America (59 million) and Northern Africa and Western Asia (49 million).

By country, the United States (51 million) hosted the largest migrant population (19% of the world migrant population) followed by Germany and Saudi Arabi (13 million each), among others.

“These data are critical for understanding the important role of migrants and migration in the development of both countries of origin and destination,” the UN Under-Secretary-General for DESA Liu Zhenmin said in a statement.

The report found a steep rise in forced displacements across international borders. Between 2010 and 2017, the number of refugees and asylum seekers rose by about 13 million.

Northern Africa and Western Asia were the major hosts for around 46% of the global refugees and asylum seekers, followed by sub-Saharan Africa (21%).
