COVID-19 India: Diabetes, Hypertension High Risk Factors

Here comes a surprising update on Coronavirus outbreak in India! 

We have seen the country reporting a sudden rise in number of positive and deaths too due to the virus outbreak. 

As the latest survey says, majority Indians who died of coronavirus as of April 06, 2020, fall in the age group of 60 years. 

This age-wise death rate was calculated based on the official data for 4,069 cases and 109 deaths as of Monday. 

Within the overall Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 2.7 percent, the rate of deaths below 40 years age stands at 0.4 percent, while it is 2.4 percent between the 50-60 age group and further at 8.9 percent for 60-year age group. 

According to the survey, these rates are in line with the trend in other countries. 

The data shows majority of death cases reported diabetes and hypertension, and both in some cases. 

Whereas in China, majority of people who died of coronavirus had heart and lung diseases, followed by diabetes and hypertension. 

Looking at the information of 86 people with co-morbidities: 

• Half of the people were diabetic, and 47 percent had hypertension, and over a third had both 
• One in five had lung disease or asthma 
• Renal disease was also reported in some of them 

Overall, more than 40 percent of the examined cases had two pre-existing conditions, while 17 percent cases had more than three co-morbidities and a third of those total number had one co-morbidity. 

Diabetes has been reported as the leading co-morbidity among the infected. 

ICMR considers diabetes and hypertension as two leading risk factors.
