The Government of India (GoI) has made FASTags mandatory for all vehicles in the country from midnight of February 15, 2021.
Earlier in November 2020, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) had issued a notification declaring FASTags mandatory for all vehicles from January 1, 2021. However, the deadline was later postponed to February 15, 2020.
In a bid to minimize vehicular traffic congestion at the toll plazas, the Indian Government has directed all toll plazas across the country to make toll payments electronic. With this order, all vehicles crossing toll plazas must pay toll charges using FASTag.
Likewise, FASTag is also mandatory for the registration of new four-wheelers and will be supplied by the automakers or the dealers. Moreover, a valid FASTag is mandatory for obtaining new third-party insurance from April 1, 2021.
What is FASTag?
FASTag is an electronic toll connection system that employs Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for enabling automatic payment of toll charges from the prepaid or savings account of the vehicle owner.
It is affixed on the vehicle’s windscreen and enables you to cross toll plazas without stopping for cash transactions.
What are the charges for FASTag?
FASTag has a one-time registration fee of INR 200, a reissuance fee of INR 100, and a refundable security deposit of a minimum of INR 200.

What are the documents required for FASTag registration?
- Registration certificate of the vehicle
- Passport size photo of the vehicle owner
- KYC documents of the vehicle owner such as identity proof, address proof
How to purchase FASTag for your vehicle?
The tag can be purchased from official Tag issuers or 23 certified banks, including ICICI, HDFC, SBI, Axis, and Kotak Mahindra. You can also obtain FASTags from state-run oil marketing companies IOC, BPCL, and HPCL.
What are FASTag penalties?
The penalty for violation of FASTag would be INR 300 for the first offense and INR 500 for the second offense.
The vehicles without FASTag or have a tag that does not work will have to pay twice the toll fee for the category of the vehicle they are driving.
