In a move fighting the coronavirus, the Government of India has issued strict directives to companies to allow their employees ‘work from home’.
While most companies have already implemented this, here comes an update about the declining internet speeds across the nation.
A new report said India’s fixed line broadband download speeds have dropped by 1.75 mbps in February 2020, taking the country’s ranking down three places, globally.
“As of February, the Speedtest Global Index ranks India 128th worldwide for mobile broadband performance, unchanged from January’s ranking, and 69th for fixed broadband speeds globally,” a network intelligence firm Ookla said on March 23, 2020.
While the fixed broadband speeds have improved a little in the first week of March compared to February, mobile download speeds remained flat in the last two months.
China reported the worst network performance in the Asian region impacted by coronavirus, reporting a decline in mean mobile download speeds from 68.3 mbps to 57.26 mbps.
“The overall rank of China has also dropped 5 places for mobile, from 6th to 11th worldwide between January and February,” says the report.
Amid the sudden rise in data consumption across the country due to ‘work from home’, Bharti Airtel has urged telecom companies including Vodafone, Jio and state-owned BSNL, MTNL to chalk out plans for offering uninterrupted data services.
“It is of paramount importance that at this crucial juncture, we come together as an industry to serve the nation and prepare ourselves for any kind of exigency,” Bharti Airtel said in a letter to other telecom companies.
“Would like to put in place a protocol amongst the telecom service providers (TSPs) for implementation of various measures, including Intra Circle Roaming (ICR),” Bharti Airtel said, citing the Department of Telecommunications’ SOPs for disaster situations.
According to Airtel, this ICR process will help customers enjoy 2G, #G and 4G services, and wireless internet services while on roaming in a circle.
