An 18-year-old Indian entrepreneur, Udit Singhal, has been listed in the United Nation’s 2020 Class of Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Delhi boy founded a company ‘Glass2Sand’ to turn glass waste into sand, to tackle the growing menace of glass waste. The zero-waste ecosystem initiative helped stop 8,000 bottles from being dumped in landfills and produce 4,815 kilograms of high-grade silica sand so far.
His valuable contributions to create sustainable living spaces have fetched him a position among 17 young leaders for SDGs, the highest recognition platform in the world for youngsters working towards the achievement of SDGs.
“Through the initiative, empty glass bottles are prevented from being dumped into landfills, where they won’t decompose for a million years, and are crushed into commercially valuable sand,” UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth Jayathma Wickramanayake said in a statement on Friday.
“As a Young Leader for the SDGs, I will be an active agent of change. I hope to be able to encourage communities to embrace a better civic sense to create sustainable living spaces, like when mountain-high landfills are detonated,” expressed Singhal.

The Young Leaders for SDGs program is being organized by the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth for every two years.
