IndianEra > Government > 21 Indian Institutes Featured in ‘Global University Rankings 2021’

The world university rankings are back again with the new list of varsities finalized based on various performance metrics.

The QS World University Rankings for 2021 mentioned India’s leading university, IIT-Bombay, among the list of world’s top 200 universities.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISC)-Bengaluru and IIT-Delhi were also featured on the list.

By ranking, IIT-Bombay was featured in the 172nd ranking, followed by IISC (185th) and IIT-Delhi (193rd).

Other IITs in the top-500 include IIT-Madras (275), IIT-Kharagpur (314), IIT-Kanpur (350), IIT-Roorkee (383) and IIT-Guwahati (470).

Around 21 Indian universities were mentioned in the top-1000 universities globally.

The global university rankings were decided on the following metrics:

  • Academic reputation
  • Employer reputation
  • Citations per faculty
  • Faculty/student ratio
  • International faculty ratio
  • International student ratio

With 100/100 ‘citations per faculty’, IISC-Bengaluru emerged as India’s top university for research.

The panel that finalized on global rankings said Indian varsities performed well for all metrics, especially in terms of research quality.

However, the Indian varsities remained low in terms of academic standing, teaching capacity and the level of internationalization compared to global competitors

“Though India’s universities have dropped as a group this year, this is frequently because of other universities across the world making increasingly intense efforts to enhance their educational offerings,” says Ben Sowter of QS.

To fill these gaps, Indian higher education should focus on enhancing teaching capacities and attracting more talents from different parts of the world.

“There is plenty of potential, and there are pockets of excellence within the Indian system,” Sowter adds.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues in its top position as the world’s best university, followed by Stanford and Harvard Universities.
