IndianEra > Government > India Awaits National Security Strategy, New Military Doctrine

An efficient national security strategy is need of the hour for India at the current scenario.

Yes, the National Defense Planning Committee (NDPC), headed by the National Security Advisor Ajit Dowal, is currently on the task!

The Committee is now at the final stage of preparations of the National Security Strategy (NSS) to present the country’s military doctrine to the Government of India in October 2019.

The doctrine will focus on future war fronts, preparation of naval expeditionary forces if required and the projection of comprehensive national power.

Possible Focal Points of NSS

The report is also likely to underline on ‘no use’ of nuclear power in the current context and in other consequences that lead to strategic escalations.

NSS is also likely to define the military threat to India in terms of possible fronts. Currently, the Indian Army is preparing to be able to handle military emergencies simultaneously in the north and west fronts, in a worst-case scenario.

Coming to the quantity of ammunition, the military today has inventory that can support for a 10-day intense war situation.

The new strategy also covers the role of Navy in the years to come, in terms of adding more billions-dollars-worth aircraft carriers and building new airbases, among others.

NSS is also expected to define India’s stand-off on the usage of Anti-Satellite (ASAT) weapons and more, considering the Indian doctrinal posture.

Though the DPC was formed in April 2018, the post of Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) has been pending until the government announced that on this Independence Day.

Current Army chief Bipin Rawat is most likely to chair the post with two years tenure.
