After the successful ending of Ranjan Gogoi’s term, Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde took over as the 47th Chief Justice of India (CJI).

President Ramnath Kovind administered Bobde administered to the chair on November 18, 2019.

Bobde has been part of many historic judgement in the country until the recent Ayodhya verdict, where he was part of the five-judge constitution bench that studied the case.

On inclusion of courts under RTI, the new CJI says people’s reputation cannot be put at stake for citizens’ desire to know what’s happening.

“Judicial independence has to be kept in mind” while revealing information in ‘public interest’, Gogoi had reportedly said.

On the matter of judicial infrastructure across the nation, Bobde is likely to follow his predecessor’s approach of monitoring and directing states and respective high courts to do the needful.

Justice Bobde (63) will continue in the post for around 17 months and would get relieved on April 23, 2021.
