IndianEra > Government > China Border Moves: India Committed To ‘Security and Sovereignty’

Are the border tensions between China and India rising with each passing day?

It seems so, looking at strong reactions from either side over the recent military face-off on May 05, 2020.

Hitting strongly at China’s moves in the region, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India is strongly committed to ensuring security and sovereignty.

Stating that the Chinese troops altered the situation on the ground, MEA clarified that India’s military activities remained only on the Indian side of the border.

“Any suggestion that Indian troops had undertaken activity across the LAC in the Western or the Sikkim sector is not accurate,” MEA Spokesperson said.

MEA said Chinese troops have caused hindrance to India’s regular patrolling operations in the area.

Stating that the two sides have established mechanisms to follow, MEA said border peace is an ‘essential prerequisite’ for bilateral relations.

Sources say that Chinese moves in the border area could be an indication of future discussions with India on LAC and border disputes.

LAC is a disputed region for the two nations as under special dialogue between Special Representatives, India’s Ajit Dowal (India) and China’s State Councillor Yang Jiechi.

However, China has been making the dual use of civil-military infrastructure in the Ladakh region, taking an extra advantage from the special dialogue, add the sources.

China has reportedly been strengthening its civil-military networks in the Gilgit and Baltistan and Ladakh areas, says JNU Professor Srikanth Kondapalli, India’s renowned expert on China.

According to him, Chinese activities in the region have been unprecedented over the last two decades.

However, the issue came under focus after India reacted to Chinese initiatives and started laying down strategic roads since a decade.
