IndianEra > Coronavirus > First Time in 4 Decades! India’s CO2 Emissions Decline in FY’20

The COVID-19 lockdown has disturbed life and living, globally.

But for India, the lockdown has done something useful as well besides hitting its economy and public movement.

We have seen reports that the Air Quality Index (AQI) in major Indian cities has improved in the lockdown period that hardly saw any vehicles, factories running around.

Here is another update that says India’s carbon emissions have also declined to record levels during the lockdown.

Lauri Myllyvirta and Sunil Dahiya of the Center for Energy and Clean Air said the country reports a drastic decline in CO2 emissions for the first time in four decades since 1982.

According to the research, the CO2 levels have dropped 15 percent in March 2020 and might have declined by 30 percent in the previous month, year-on-year.

The CO2 emissions, calculated by consumption of coal, oil and gas, declined by 30 million tons in 2019-20 over the previous fiscal.

As the analysts say, transport and power sectors hold a significant share of CO2 pollution in the country. The thermal sector alone has emitted 929 million tons of CO2 over the year.

The fall in fossil fuel consumption has caused this decline in CO2 emissions.

“In contrast, the renewable energy generation increased by 6.4 percent and saw a slight decrease of 1.4 percent in the first three weeks of April, the research added.
