As part of its discussions in the Upper House, the Union Home Ministry came up with some important revelation about illegal Bangladeshis in India.
In a Rajya Sabha session on February 05, 2020, the government said around‘1 lakh’ Bangladeshis overstayed in India beyond their visa validity period.
These illegal Bangladeshis entered India legally over the last three years.
Moreover, 3,727 people illegal entrants via the Indo-Bangladesh border reported during 2017-19 were apprehended and handed over to their respective authorities.
According to the Minister of State for Home Affairs, 25,942 Bangladeshis entered India legally but their visa validity expired in 2017.

Rai also briefed about the Indian citizenship granted to Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh in the last five years.

Earlier, the government had also briefed about the total number of foreign nationals given Indian citizenship in the last decade.
Meanwhile, the government informed that it is currently listening to states’ concerns on implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) alongside working on the National Population Register (NPR).
The government is in discussion with the states having concerns in regard to the preparation of NPR and implementation of CAA,” Rai said in a statement.
